Why You Should Visit Locarno
Every time we travel to Europe, we seem to stumble upon an unexpected “in-between” destination—one of those places between major stopping points we wish we had more time to explore. During our recent trip to Switzerland, Locarno turned out to be just that place!
Located along the shores of Lake Maggiore, this predominantly Italian-speaking town is deeply influenced by Italian culture, evident in its cuisine, architecture, and traditions. For us, having just left Italy, Locarno served as the perfect transition before venturing into the heart of the Swiss Alps for several days of adventure.
Piazza Grande
The Piazza Grande, Locarno’s cultural heart, has a history dating back to the 700s. Its cobblestone streets, laid in 1825, are lined with vibrant buildings housing shops and restaurants. Even if you’re in town for a quick day trip, this square is a delightful spot to explore.
Also, if you visit during July, the Piazza Grande transforms into an open-air concert venue for the annual Moon and Stars festival, which has featured world-renowned artists like Sting, Santana, and Joe Cocker.
Termali Salini Spa
We have visited a few thermal spas in Italy, Costa Rica, and the U.S., but the Termali Salini Spa has to be our favorite! Verzasca Valley
The Verzasca Valley area is a 25 minute drive north from Locarno, but if a hike or beautiful walk along the emerald-green Verzasca River sounds appealing then you may want to keep this item on your short list of places to visit in Locarno. The most photographed area of Verzasca Valley is probably the Ponte dei Salti stone bridge in the town of Lavertezzo.
The valley is also home to the Verzasca Dam – a 720 ft. (220m) arch dam. James Bond movie fans may recognize it from the bungie jumping scene in the James Bond “Golden Eye” film.
Cardada-Cimetta Panorama
The Locarno mountains provide stunning views of Lake Maggiore from virtually any point, but the most breathtaking panoramas await at the Cardada landscape promontory and the Cimetta summit. Reaching the summit is an unforgettable journey that unfolds in three stages:
1. Locarno to Orselina Station
The Orselina station is easily accessible via bus line 3 from the Locarno train station. Once at Orselina, you’ll transfer to the cable car.
2. Cable Car to Cardada
The cable car ride to Cardada reveals scenic trails and panoramic viewpoints overlooking Locarno and the Lake Maggiore basin. It’s a must for photography enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
3. Chairlift to Cimetta
From the Cardada station, a short 5-minute walk takes you to the Cardada-Cimetta chairlift. Unlike traditional chairlifts, these face outward, offering unobstructed views throughout the ride. Upon arriving at Cimetta, you can swing on a nostalgic swing overlooking the Lago Maggiore basin, explore hiking trails with spectacular vistas, or dine at the Hotel Ristorante Colmanicchio.
Madonna del Sasso Monastery
For centuries, the faithful have made the pilgrimage to the Madonna del Sasso Monastery, a sacred site in Locarno where Friar Bartolomeo da Ivrea is said to have had a vision of the Madonna and Child. Perched on a hill overlooking the Locarno area, the basilica features a spacious square that offers breathtaking panoramic views. Inside, visitors will find the revered statue of the Madonna del Sasso, along with an array of artistic treasures that reflect centuries of devotion. Highlights include1 Bramantino’s altarpiece, “Flight into Egypt,” and Antonio Ciseri’s masterpiece, “Transportation of Christ to the Sepulchre,” painted in Florence around 1870.

- By Funicular: Take the funicular directly from Locarno.
- By Bus: Use bus line 3 from the Locarno train station to reach Orselina.
- On Foot: Enjoy a scenic 0.75-mile walk from the Locarno train station, though the moderately steep path may require some effort.
This iconic landmark is a must-visit for its historical significance, artistic beauty, and stunning views of the surrounding Ticino region.
Paddle Boarding on Lake Maggiore
